Correct method for checking CM?

Hello, I know what to look for when checking my CM, but I don't know if I should just evaluate what I see when I wipe, or if I should be inserting a finger to check the CM from around the actual cervix. I have noticed I am sometimes able to detect EWCM by checking the cervix when I am otherwise "dry", which can be problematic when trying to determine what day to BD! I have seen both methods online, but I wanted to see what everyone else is doing or what you may have been told by a professional. Thank you!
