In a sitting

Is it necessary to offer both breasts in one sitting? When I was in the hospital my midwife told me not to let baby feed for more than 40 minutes off one breast, if she wants to go longer then to offer her the other one. I've read a few posts on here and other sites of mothers offering the 2nd breast after anywhere from 5-15 minutes and baby then being very fussy.
