Breastfeeding

My son is 5 days old and has had trouble latching from the beginning and so I was advised to pump, I'm not pumping nearly enough to cater to his needs right now so I have to result in formula. I feel like a complete failure as a mother because I can't produce the amount he needs. But can you switch back and forth between breast milk and formula? I hate to give up my breast milk.
