Is it appropriate for teachers to interact with students through social networking sites?

At my high school there was a policy that a teacher could only add or message a student after that student graduated. If a student sends you a friend request or message, you are to not reply to the message, or to deny the request.

If it's public then yes but not in private. I have several high school teachers and coaches of mine on my Facebook I used to message them while I was in school on their pages in public but I don't anymore.

Nope. There's already too much blurring of what constitutes public and private lives. I don't care how old you are, if at any point you were required to address me as Ms. Taylor, we cannot be friends on Facebook.

Plus there are certain things/pictures I legit don't want to see.

They can however add me on LinkedIn😊.

Depends why they are. My teachers in high school did. Mainly to let us know if there was a change or something for class. And once we graduated, he would message us and check on all of us to see how were doing and would occasionally go out to drink with us, etc. I never did because I was always focused on college and was in a different town, but alot of my classmates have hung out with him.

I used to babysit for some of my teachers when I was in high school. So teachers talking to students on social media doesn't seem weird to me. Especially since you can save the conversation if something inappropriate would come up
 I get where people are coming from but I think that's safer than being in a classroom together alone with a teacher talking there's no proof of what's being said in there

In high school? No. We had a teacher get fired because it came to light that she was sleeping with a student and they talked frequently and sexually over Facebook. College is a bit different imo

In my university we have a Face book group for Class and I'll message my professor all the time. Lol he was fine with it.  That's what it was for. Easy access abd class material

It depends. I think it's a nice idea to communicate that way and it would be convenient, but that's all it should be used for. I had a high school teacher years ago and he would comment on girls photos... Creepy

I think that's just asking for trouble. That's like being Facebook friends with your boss...it's a no no.
