How do you not keep asking if he's ok? :/

My boyfriend has seemed a bit off lately.. Not in a "he must be cheating" way.. Just more quiet and sometimes just looks sad. Every time I ask him if he's okay he says yes.. But then just looks sad again

My SO hates when I asked what's wrong. I changed its to how's it going so it's sounds neutral. I also have to take a step back and leave him to do his own thing.

I do things like make him a special dinner (stuffed chicken or ribs) or suggest hiking in nature(usually up a mountain). I try to crack some jokes, that's my personality, sometimes I go to far tho and it doesn't help.

Happiness comes from within.  Sometimes no matter what I do, my SO is just grumpy. I call him grumpo, he doesn't like that. Haha

My boyfriend does this sometimes too. He deals with depression, sometimes he wants to talk about it sometimes he doesn't. But when he doesn't I respect that and give him space and he deals with it on his own.
