Car seat bases necessary?

I bought a chicco stroller/car seat combo and of course it came with a base. Being a first time mom I'm just wanting to know if the bases are necessary or just a convince thing? Back when my nephew was a baby I remember car seats didn't even come with bases you just strapped a seat belt around them, which my car seat now does have something that says if no base strap here. I plan on using rh3 base in my car I just need to know if It's necessary to buy more for my husband and inlaws.

Uhhh this is my pet peeve. Why not spend extra and make sure your baby is safe, or better yet move the dang base when you need to. The frequency of this question honestly scares me!

The base is a MUST HAVE AND MUST USE item. Where I live, they won't let you take the baby home if you don't have a base and car seat.

Thanks ladies! I figured the base was huge on convince. Additional bases for the car seat alone at 90 a piece. I hate the thought of spending 180 for a car seat she may grow out of in a year's time..

No it's not, I just used the seatbelt and the hospital was perfectly okay without me having one in the car.

We will only have a base in my car. My SO will rarely have the baby in his car so he can just use a seatbelt if need be. Same with my mom. If it was a car they would be in regularly I would buy an extra base.

It's a must.. It's for safety reasons. It stays in your car at all times.

I think the margin of error without a base is too great. I would be too paranoid. Is the belt twisted? Did it fully retract and lock? With the base its a one and done

Bases do make it wa easier. I have the base in my car and it's click and go. I do drive around with a lot of other people and strap in the seat. It does not take that long and is still easy and safe. If it was not safe it would not be an option.
