What do u think of crib bumpers?

I've heard some say it's not safe, but I like the look of it. Not really sure if it's needed but would like to hear what u think?

Not safe. Higher risk of SIDs with a bumper than there is of risk that the baby gets arm/leg stuck. I'm not doing one ...

I had my daughter sleeping in a bassinet until she was over 6 months. By the time she moved to her crib, she was always moving and we kept bumpers to keep her from getting her arms and feet stuck. She's now a healthy 10 month old girl, the bumper has been moved all the way down to where it blocks the space between the crib and mattress (so she can't climb on it) and we keep it there because she rolls over so much that when we took them out, she was getting herself stuck in that space in some way during the night. They say bumpers not safe because of SIDS and suffocation risks, but she was old enough to move if she was placed up against the bumper at 6 months and she never did that anyway. Our pediatrician agrees with how her crib and such has been situated. I think it's more of a no-no for newborns and honestly, there isn't a single person I know who chooses to not use bumpers even while their children are newborns and their kids are all fine. Its considered not safe by some people and I'd worry about leaving my child with the bumpers as a newborn. However, with nothing else in the crib, once they start moving really well, I think bumpers come in handy. I took them out and my daughter was always getting stuck and actually hurt her leg at one point. Bumpers went back in and everything's a-okay.

We registered for a mesh bumper at buybuybaby because we are worried about baby getting his arms and legs caught in the crib but didn't want the traditional bumpers because of SIDS.

It's fine. I used them with my son who is almost two now. Never had a problem. Kept him from getting his arms and legs caught in the bars and made him feel more secure, not so exposed. They say that it's not safe for legal reasons..but you can still buy them. As a new mom you check on your baby all the time anyway our they get up frequently..so it's unlikely that they'll end up pushed against it without you catching it fairly soon. Plus, if they can roll around and lift their head then they can move away from it.
