I lost my virginity recently and I want to start on birth control. I know I don't want to take the pill because my memory is awful, so I'm choosing between the shot and the implant. The only side effect that I read about and I'm worried about is having my period for three weeks to a month at a time. Any suggestions to which one I should pick?

Do a lot of research before you do anything. I'm not a doctor but my personal doctor recommended that I start a pill before trying anything else. Your body could react horribly to synthetic hormones and you won't know it until you try them first. If you get the implant and have a bad reaction then you have to go through the procedure to get it out again and if you get the shot then you have three months of bad reaction if your body doesn't do well with it.

Remembering to take he pill isn't that bad. I also have a bad memory. I normally never remember to take pills when I'm supposed to, but I've never forgotten a birth control pill. I picked a time when I know I'm usually home (7:30pm) and able to take the pill, and I got an app to help me remember. I guess knowing that babies could happen if I forget is motivation enough to help me remember and my alarm is really helpful.

Ultimately it should be a decision you and your doctor should make together. You'll hear good and bad reviews of all the hormonal birth control methods because not all hormones work for all people's bodies. It's kind of a trial and error thing.

I personally have the implant because it is the most effective besides abstinence.  The only side effect with it is irregular periods. But with the pill, you have to remember to take it at the same time everyday and to never miss one because it can really mess you up and also the pill isn't super effective.

Take the pill before you start anything else. Your body won't be used to the when you first start, so you may feel sick for a day or two, or you will feel the exact same. It's always better to start low and work your way to bigger things. I know a doctor would recommend taking the pill for a little while before making a bigger commitment.

I was on the shot and it really fucked me up. I'll try to make it short. I got bad mood swings, hair loss, acne, depression, severe vaginal dryness, and month long periods. I switched to the nexplanon about 2-3 weeks into my recent shot and the implant has fixed most of it. I still can't get wet during sex, but I finally get discharge again and my acne is not as bad. I've been on the implant for a month and it's made me so much happier. I had to beg my mom for it and now I don't have to worry about birth control or condoms for 3 years (since I've been in a relationship with the same person for a year now (tomorrow is our one year anniversary) so we don't use condoms anymore). The implant is also very very effective. More than the pill and the shot, up there with getting your tubes tied or a hysterectomy almost. Obviously it can't beat a hysterectomy but it's up there. I highly suggest the implant.

Depo made me so sick and I bled everyday for the nine months that I was on it. Everyone will react to it differently. Talk to your doctor. Some people love it. Others hate it. Just remember that it lasts for 3 months each shot.  That is very convenient, but you don't like it you are stuck with those symptoms for 3+ months.

The depo shot was by far my favorite. I was on it for five years. Its one shot every 12 weeks in the ass cheek. You have to get the first dose while you're on your period and typically it can extend your period for a bit. After that it goes 3 ways- no period, lighter than usual, or heavier than usual. It all depends on your body. Personally I had a period for three weeks then I only got 4 periods over five years.
