Tongue/lip tie, high palate, not gaining weight
So somehow even though my baby lost way too much weight during our two days in the hospital, no one there (including the two lactation consultants I saw) nor the pediatrician noticed that he had a tongue and lip tie. I saw a lactation consultant yesterday hoping for advice on weaning off nipple shields, but when she weighed him for the first time in like 3 weeks we realized he's barely above his birthweight. He had been nursing constantly since birth, and I was starting to think it was a transfer problem from using the nipple shields but really the shield was probably helping because of his high palate combined with the tongue and lip ties...without the shields he probably would have lost more weight instead of just not gaining much. Anyway, the lactation consultant recognized the tongue tie and recommended we go to a different doctor who clipped his tongue and lip ties this morning and it was super traumatic for us both because I wasn't allowed to feed him for 2 hours before then they called me in late and it took awhile to see the doctor and he was crying with hunger for a long time :( Borrowed a hospital grade pump and have been bottle feeding and he put on some weight already in just a day. I feel terrible, he's been practically starving for almost 2 months.
