Light spotting before period

I'm about 12 days past ovulation and woke up today with a light brown to dark red when I wiped. Should I worry or is this normal? I took a pregnancy test last night in the evening and it was negative but was an expired test. Is it too early to tell? Should I maybe try and take one today since I could have implantation spotting? Or should I worry of miscarriage?
