I have large areoles too. The lactation consultant said the baby should take in the lower half and as much of the top half and she can.

I have the same "problem" but my nurse said if it doesn't hurt and little one seems full and satisfied, has at least 50/75% in their mouth then it's ok" oh and make sure they're getting the whole nipple that's where the milk flows from, not from the whole areola.

The only problem with the smaller latch is it could cause some plugged milk ducts or lower milk supply because he isn't taking milk from a larger circumference. I have to pull my LO off when she tries to latch that small. Are you using a pacifier? Sometimes that causes the smaller latch - we had to give it up for a day to try and reset her and worked really hard to get a better latch. Good luck mama!
