Are cribs just for "Show"??

Almost everyone I know that has a nursery hardly even allow the baby to utilize it.... Granted I have seen some amazing baby nurseries and I would love to create one! But are they really necessary??? Give or take a baby sleeps in a crib for about the first 2years or less and then it's time to recycle the crib and get them ready for a bed... I was just thinking ditching the entire "nursery" thing and just create a big boy room with a bed and dressers and just perhaps getting a pack n play or bassinet( I know the bassinet is a temporary fix)until he is ready for a bed... Please your thoughts....
