Baby sleeping in crib right away

We are planning to try our baby in his crib from day one, but I feel like I should probably have a bassinet in case he (or I!) can't do the crib right away. Has anyone had experience with putting their newborn in their crib right away? How did it go? Did you get a bassinet? Should I have one anyway? My SIL was successful with my niece sleeping in her crib from day one, but she also slept 10 hours straight by 5 weeks lol
