My journey with PCOS
For the last 11 years my husband and I have never once used any form of birth control. No condoms, no pills, nothing. We weren't actively trying but not preventing us getting pregnant either. For 11 years we've not experienced the birth of a child or really even a"scare".
A few weeks ago I finally gained enough courage to make an appointment with a fertility specialist. I spent the weeks prior to my appointment going over every possible thing that could be wrong with me, with us, but mostly me. Why couldn't we conceive?!
I attended my appointment yesterday. Although my husband did not go with me, once I met the doctor I immediately felt at ease. He was warm, funny, and very insightful. He asked me several questions, each question he asked I responded with a yes. He gave me multiple options of what could possibly be wrong, and he gave me multiple possibilities of how we could correct the issues.
He took me into an exam room and did a vaginal ultrasound. As soon as he saw my ovaries he stopped and asked me a few more questions. Do you or have you gained weight and have had trouble losing? Yes. Do you get thick hairs in several places including your face? Yes. Do you have painful menstrual cycles when you get them? Yes, sometimes. At that moment he said he knew the problem. I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). It's not as major as I thought maybe it was. It's still scary, at least for me, but today I start my treatment. Today I start on my path to actually getting myself, my menstrual cycles back on track and I will actually begin to ovulate. Today I begin my journey of accomplishing one of my life's many goals, to become a MOMMY!
