How safe are condoms?

Hi guys, im not on birth control and i havent had sex yet, but i want to have sex with my boyfriend this week. How effective are condoms on there own? Do they break often? Is there anything i should know/look up before using them? I am having difficulty getting a prescription for birth control since my doctors office hours overlap with my work hours.

Condoms are very effective if used properly. Condoms don't break very easily and when they do it's usually due to not enough lubriactaion but do not use any oil based products with a latex condom. Make sure when he puts it on that he pinches the tip to create a space for the semen. Always check expiration dates and remember that you can only use a condom once and it has to be thrown away and a new one needs to be put on if you intend to have sex again. Many people use condoms as their only form of contraception and it works well as a form of birth control and as protection from STDs/STIs. Condoms have broken on me before and I've had to take plan B. 
Make sure to do everything Carly said lol 
But if it happens to break on you, you can go to your local pharmacy like CVS and Walgreens and buy a plan B pill. You have 3 day to take it and it works by preventing ovulation and fertilization. It costs 60$ and you can usually find them in the condom isle. If not you can ask the employees for help. Stay safe!
