Baby and married vs baby and not married

Do you believe that children who are born into families with married parents are generally better off than people who are simply "together", no paper or legal binding involved? If not, why? 
Do you think it's better for parents to not be married? If you chose this route, explain why you felt it was a better option for your children. Is it because marriage is a concept to you? Just a piece of paper? Go into details.
Some good arguments: married couples usually have shared assets. If one spouse leaves or becomes negligent, there's more "parental insurance", if you will. 
Married households set a standard that people shouldn't have children unless they're married, which may defer young teens from early pregnancy
