first trimester screening + gender?

I have my first trimester screening tomorrow. I've seen everyone's posts about finding out gender - did you know beforehand that it was an option? Or did you ask at the appointment to find out? It wasn't mentioned to me at all by my midwife. I know I'll be having bloodwork done, as well as an ultrasound. Hubby and I would really like to know ASAP, but I'm not sure if it's just not an option at my obgyn or what since it wasn't mentioned. Share your stories and experiences please!

My insurance didn't cover that test unless I had any red flags on the test that just looks for chromosomal abnormalities. So sad but I can wait an additional 8 weeks!

Do you know the type of test you're having?  If you're getting Harmony, Panorama or Maternit21 they look at the baby's dna and can give quite accurate results for the sex as well as for chromosomal problems. If you're having the 'combined' screening which is made up of a blood test that looks at markers in your blood combined with some measurements from the NT scan then that test doesn't give an indication of sex.

Typically, I believe, that test is offered to women who will be 35 or over at delivery. It tests for chromosomal abnormalities. Gender is just an added perk.

It depends how far are you. They found out the gender at 11w in my case and confirmed it at 12w both times with ultrasound. I didn't ask they just asked me if I wanted to know.

We had genetic blood work drawn Friday. We are getting the gender but I wanted to make sure everything is ok! We did have to pay $200 for the test out of pocket because I'm only 24.

They won't be able to tell from the ultrasound, but depending on the blood tests you're getting they can tell from that (if you get the chromosomal testing).
