Question for all the ladies that have used unum short term disability before. With my first pregnancy I did not have any money coming in for my 10 week maternity leave, but since then they have added STD to our insurance. My question is they only offer 6-8 weeks depending on the birth. I really would like to take 12 weeks. I have heard they will pay out your pto first since the disability won't kick in for a week. I'm wondering if I can use all of PTO first(I should have 2-3 weeks available) and then call unum to get STD started. Do you have to apply the day you have the baby. Or can I work it out with my work to pay out all of my PTO first before I contact unum to get more time covered?
