Asking family/friends to be vaccinated?

We are having a sharp increase of whooping cough cases in the area I live in (Alberta, Canada). I'm asking my family and close friends to get the Tdap vaccine before they visit the baby. My sister in law, who is due in June, says I'm overreacting, because she didn't ask anyone to vaccinate at all and she is due next month. Is this really such a bad thing to ask? I'm not saying they can NEVER visit, just that if they want to come before the baby has her own vaccinations (2 months) then I'm asking they update their vaccines. Otherwise they can wait until she's two months. Is this such a big deal?

I think that's perfectly reasonable. It's our job to do what's best for our babies. You're just asking people to get a vaccination, you're not putting them under quarantine

I'd research if it's a live vaccine, if so I'd wait before they could visit as that alone could be a possibility to exposure. Jewish tradition is to wait a number of days for girl and number of days for boy. Both being longer than a month. I'm not Jewish, however, there's a simple and good reason to not expose your child to public right away. But know, if you take your baby to check ups as schedu, you will be exposing your child to other children at the Dr's office, and you cannot control who is vaccinated, same as taking baby anywhere public.

I think asking them to make sure they are up to date is not unreasonable. I actually told my husband that his BFF's kids are not allowed to be around ours until our son is a year old. They didn't vaccinate their two youngest and I'm not taking a chance of my son getting something from them because he is too young to be vaccinated. Once he is a year old and has the Dtap and MMR vaccine, then his kids can come over it not until then.

With My first I didn't even get vaccinated! Wasn't worried about it at all!! 
This time around though not only is whooping cough going around, but our unborn bubba has a congenital lung defect and we aren't sure how it'll affect her breathing etc....

I am making sure anyone that is coming into contact with her before her first immunizations has had their tdap booster! Not taking any chances this time!!

In australia it is becoming increasingly normal to make everyone have a booster prior to a baby being born! Yes I used to think it was going a little over the top but now I don't! You just have to watch a video of a bub with whooping cough and you'll soon be all for it! X

You have every right to ask your family/friends to do that if it concerns you.  Just like with washing hands and not coming if they are sick.

However, I will point out that not having a vaccination does not mean that someone automatically has any sort of harmful disease and it's actually much harder to diagnose a vaccinated person that actually gets a sickness that they were vaccinated from because they often times show no symptoms while contagious.

Again though, you can always request visitors get boosters if you choose.

My husband's brother and SIL told us we had to before we visited baby at 2.5 months. My husband complained and talked crap. I just kept telling him, "it's not our kid" and made him go get it with me.

I only asked my visiting family to make sure they were up to date on their tdap and flu vaccines. As far as friends go, I didnt.
