Money wise a convertible makes the most sense but I can't imagine having to take a newborn in and out of one in the cold or when I'm in a hurry. Popping a pumpkin seat in and out is way more convenient. If your trying to decide on brands I purchased the Chicco on recommendation of several mommy friends and family members as well as a huge amount of positive online reviews.

It is up to you honestly.  My friend changed to a convertible car seat when her baby was 4 months because he is growing so fast and babies r us had a trade in deal. She wishes she didn't because the convertible seat only fits in the middle back seat and it's hard for her to lift her baby in and out of the seat. On the other hand, she is glad she did switch over because it looks like he won't be able to fit in an infant seat in another month, he is really tall! So she saved money in the end.

I put one of each on my registry. I don't know if this is just a state law thing, but you may want to check with your hospital because all of the hospitals where I live require you to have an actual infant car seat, they literally won't let you take your baby home until you have an infant car seat.
