No period in 35 days TTC

I have not had a a period in 35 days meaning it's late. I am TTC and have an irregular period. Last month I only had dark brown spotting for 3 days and it was only when I wiped randomly. I took a preg test when my period was due and I had a faint line which might be evaporation line. I took another test 3 days later and it said negative. Does it matter what time of the day I take it? Does it take a while for my hcg levels to show? Or should I call this month a lost cause. Any advice helps been TTC for 12 months. Will seek Doctor soon. Thanks
