Swaddling now linked to SIDS?!

Question

Anyone else seeing these articles today that are linking swaddling with an increased risk of SIDS? This is scary stuff, as I had definitely planned on swadding my child. What do you guys think - will you still do it??

The headline is misleading. I went to the journal and read the study. Swaddling increases the risk of the baby is on its side or belly. So overall, risk is increased if you let your baby sleep on side/belly while swaddled. Well, obviously! Putting the baby on his or her back (and not co-sleeping without a side compartment on your bed) has been shown over and over to reduce SIDS significantly. The study says nothing new. Don't be fooled by the headlines trying to grab your attention. ;) As soon as the baby can roll over, you just need to stop swaddling. But this has been the recommendation for over ten years, if not twenty.

I work in a children's hospital and we are implementing safe sleep which includes no swaddling. It's not so much the act of swaddling as it is the swaddle could come loose and the blanket cover baby's face. We recommend right size sleep sacks as the baby can wear them and they can't get over baby's face. The other rules are Alone (no blankets, stuffed animals, or bumpers), on their Back, in their Crib (not your bed or in a swing/car seat. All this at least until age 1. Babies don't have the reflex to turn their head or change position if they start to breathe in CO2. They will just breathe it in until they pass out and suffocate. It's so scary as a soon to be mom! We do have babies brought in the ER from sids. Many times its related to cosleeping but some parents find their baby at nap time with the blanket over their face. They may be resuscitated but often brain damage is too extensive. I am definitely getting an apnea monitor and following the rules of safe sleep!

I swaddled mine and planning to do with my second;) there are tutorials on YouTube and blankets with instructions;)

If you swadle baby right they are not going to be able to get out. It starts with the right size and a stretchy blanket, a simple onesie, and a tight tuck that they DON'T  teach in the hospitals. My babies were 4 mo before they were able to move while swaddled. By then they were not really needing to be swaddled. A friend of mine use to mission in Guatemala and showed me how they wrap their babies safely, snuggly, and baby LOVES LOVES LOVES IT.

Yes it's linked as baby over heats and has no way of moving. I just use multiple sheets and blankets depending on weather. Usually just a lose sheet.

I think its for like if your baby sleeps on it side or stomach. Cos its face would be in the mattress and its hands arent free to push its face up when babys neck isnt strong enough

its mostly for older babies who can roll around in their sleep and possibly roll onto their bellies

I wouldnt swaddle a baby and then put him to bed. Just like they said that we shouldnt give a baby a blanket thats too thick when they go to sleep.
