Does the sperm always fertilize the egg?

I came across someone asking this question online and thought I should ask it on here.. If you have sex at the right time, and there are sperm waiting for the egg and then the egg gets released, does one of them 100% always fertilize the egg? And the reason why it takes a while for people to conceive is because the egg doesn't always implant? I've always wondered if sperm always fertilize the egg every time seeing as that is what they are waiting for. If they do, why does it take some of us so long to conceive 😣
