Spotty period?

This month my period was barely there - more like discharge. It was spotty, very light and I could only tell its presence when I used a tampon that something was even there. I still had cramping, however. Took 2 pregnancy tests not both BFN. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy with a symptom such as this? This is the first month I did an IUI and it failed. Wondering if this has something to do with it but I don't think so. Anyone experience something similar in terms of light, spotty period? This entire TTC process is no fun at this point. Always seems like it's something.
