Bedtime schedule??

Question

My lo is 5 weeks today and I've tried making a bedtime schedule but it's impossible! He sleeps sporadically, it's never the same from day to day. He only sleeps 1-2 hours at a time and is hard to put to sleep unless he falls asleep nursing. He wakes up if moved though. Any tips to get him on a schedule? I do bath time at 8:30 no matter what already

I recommend checking out The book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child." The author (a pediatrician) cites a ton of research and says that 6 weeks is the time babies' sleep rhythms start to mature to be more like adults', and that makes them ready for an earlier bedtime (like 6-8pm). Good luck!

It's a little too early for a schedule.

I put mine to bed around 10. We change and feed him then I put him in the crib. Once we start feeding all the lights are low and if he wakes up when I put him down I turn on the mobile and it calms him back down. He doesn't always fall asleep right away but as long as he's not crying or anything I just leave him there and he eventually falls asleep.

At that age crying it out and sleep training aren't very realistic (CIO can actually make the baby feel neglected because they aren't old enough to understand why they are being left alone. I realize you aren't really asking about sleep training, but letting them sleep the way they do (waking when they want to feed instead of sleeping through the night) helps reduce the risk of SIDS.

As far as the bedtime routine, just continue the bath 2-3 times a week, feeding with dim lights or darkness, and putting them in the crib/bassinet. They will get used to that and realize that it is bedtime and start waking to feed from there.
