Tip for a tattoo?

Question

I was just wondering if there's a general rule on tipping a tattoo artist? I'm getting a fairly good size piece by the owner of a shop and he already charged $170/hr. & my tattoo takes 2 sessions. 
I tip my hairstylist.. Do I tip my tattoo artist? Even when the tattoo is already going to be at least $800?

This is controversial but it's a common thing to not tip the owner. Whether it be hair dresser or tattoo artists or someone in a restaurant. I always tip everyone that does a service for me.

I didn't. The owner of the place did mine, & he literally just put the money in his pocket. Mine took all of 10 mins (maybe). I guess it depends on where you go & who does it. My sister has 12 tattoos, and has also had the owner do them & has never tipped before.

I've always tipped for tattoos or piercings. My big piece I tipped $60 during my first session. My small piece that took less than 20 minutes to do I tipped $20 and I've always tipped $10 on my piercings. My husband's tattoo is alot bigger than mine, cost $450 and I still tipped $80. If the work is great and the artist is great there should be no reason to not tip them in my opinion

I've tipped on some of my tattoos but I base it off the artist. If he was friendly, took his time to do great work, and just have an overall good experience....I'll tip. But if it's just, sit here and let's do the damn thing, then I might not. But in my opinion...its kinda like the same rule of tipping your waitress. Even tho I know tattoo artist jobs aren't based on tips like a waitress....I just like interactions.

I get my tattoos done by the owner of the shop so I don't tip him since he keeps all the money. I do think it's a good idea to tip if it's another person in the shop though.

I've always tipped when I'm happy with the work. My thigh piece was 400 bucks, and after all four sessions, she probably made about 150 to 200 off of me in just tips because I was so impressed. I would base it off sessions. If it's a huge piece and you know it's going to take months, everytime you go in, tip like 20 bucks. They work hard, and they are creating art for you, so I think it's expected. But if you're going in for two sessions and getting it all hammered out in 2 10 hour sittings, I think it's reasonable to tip on the higher side.

I love my tattoo artist and she does really great work, we have great conversation, she's very nice and friendly so I always tip her. I have tipped her any where between $20-$60.
