How to choose the right daycare ?

What are a couple of things you look at while choosing one ?

When we looked for our son I eliminated any right off the bat that didn't want us to come look at the daycare during hours they have children. To me that's very suspicious and made me feel uncomfortable wth those places like that. The one we did choose for our son is learning based and he's already knows most his letters and is learning to spell some words and can count pretty high amoung other things he's learned. They still have play time, snacks & lunches, nap time and a bunch of other stuff. The daycare is very family oriented also which I love. Also, it is a bigger daycare, but it has rooms that divide all the different ages/stages. Like a baby room, toddler room (where they helped with potty training), and a pre school room.

The ideal daycare would be a small in home daycare. My grandma had an in home daycare and had no more than 8 kids at a time and all the kids and their parents became family. Every Christmas she would buy the kids a few presents and then on their birthdays they got presents and cake and now every summer she has a sleep over at her house with the kids and its awesome so if i was looking for a daycare id look for somethingn like that.

We chose ours based on whether they provided diapers&swipes, food, the hours, and- odd as it might sound- traffic. They all have low turnover/high stability near us, and they are all obscenely priced...  Also, it sounds so cliché but we also went with out gut... On paper a few were great, but I just felt very indifferent to them in person. We didn't just choose ours based on infancy- but what it would offer down the road.
