Sign language?

Question

Here lately I've seen articles about teaching your child sign language for things and potty training. Why is this? I know if the only means a parent can communicate is through sign language then obvi they'll teach their kid.

My son knew the sign for "more" pretty early, before he could talk. It actually helped me a lot when we ate! A lot easier than trying to figure out why he's crying / whining lol 😊

That's the only sign he ever caught on to though. He stopped using it when he started using words to communicate.

My kids are4 and 8 and we started learning on our own there is a show on Netflix signing time with Alex and Lea and they love it

The sign for "more" and "milk" are the easiest to teach and most useful.  The infant can tell you when they want to eat which most of the time leads to them not screaming at you when they're hungry - benefits for everyone involved. :)

I taught mine sign language to help with communication. By 6 months they were able to communicate and tell me what they wanted. I cannot stand whining and sign helped this a lot.

Children understand 3 words for every 1 they can actually say and even babies do incredibly well with signs. It reduces frustration for them and makes for less tantrums. Happier kid and happier parents!

Babies can begin signing back as early as 6 months vs about a year when they can begin talking back. It helps develop their language center of the brain and I find it convenient that I can be in a conversation with an adult and my daughter can sign something to me or I can sign something back if she is asking for something. 
It's also really useful when they get older so your kids don't say rude things in public lol At family gatherings, tons of kids yell out "poop!" and stuff like that when they have to potty (and they're kids, of course they don't know better yet) but my little girl will just sign poop or potty and we can avoid that.
You don't need many signs, just things like more, milk, potty, etc and it will become second nature quickly if you just choose which words you want them to learn and use. We're on our way to becoming completely fluent as a family in sign language, but most people who use baby sign language just learn 5-10 signs.

We have taught my son because he's a late talker, but with sign language it's another way he can communicate with us instead of whining about everything. It's also just a skill that works their little growing brains!
