Should a school principal be able to call someone's parents to tell them that the child has a gay pride flag and that they have been carrying it around?

If it was interrupting classes and distracting students then they can take it just like any other object balls, phones, Ipads etc. If they took it because it was a gay pride flag that's completely wrong and out of line. I guess we need a little more of the story. Because was the principal calling saying the student was being disruptive with the flag or did the principal just call to say the student was carrying around a gay pride flag at school?

Depends...what were you doing carrying around the flag? Were you saying anything, or protesting? are flags against the dress code? Were you disrupting class? What was the point of carrying the flag? Fashion or making a statement? I don't know what the policy is at school but I know some places won't even let boys wear ball caps. So the principal may have had every right to call your parents.

Yes the principal should be able to call about anything. Call about behavior and preventing behavior are 2 separate things.

I pressed no but it's situational. It could be inappropriately used. Someone could be carrying it around and doing rude things to it. Or they could be waving it in class..

Yes, as a teacher, anything I take gets a phone call home, especially if I've given a warning about it. If it's a distraction, it needs to be addressed. If it's not a distraction, I leave it alone.
