To drink a cup of coffee or not?

Hey guys, I've been really good with caffeine intake but this morning my fiancés coffee smells so good; and now that's all I'm craving. Would one cup really be so bad?

I cut caffeine out cold turkey the second I found out I was pregnant.

I used to think caffeine in moderation was fine however with a past miscarriage I began studying it at great length wirh my R1 university and the research our team has done with hundreds of pregnant women has shown me that it can actually be very, very dangerous for baby if not deadly.

Caffeine is a drug and babies can't digest the drug as efficiently as adults can so it stays in their system much, much longer.

It's also a diuretic which dehydrates you AND baby and raises his fragile heart rate to scary levels. All that can be a system overload for tiny fetuses.

Many people will justify drinking it saying "oh, my baby turned out fine" or "my doctor said it's okay, what's the big deal?" Well those are easily rebutted. Your baby can appear fine initially when born but there is simply not enough research to determine if their cognitive or other skills are weakened or interfered with down the line. In addition, some recent studies are linking caffeine consumption (even WELL under the "reccomended" 200mg) with ADHD as well as other neurological disorders later in life.

Think about it: doctors are going on very, very, very limited information here. It's honestly nothing more than a best guess at this point because significantly more research needs to be done.

There will always be moms who argue the facts because they don't want to give up something they love so much however I love my baby more than I love caffeine.

It's simply not worth risking my innocent baby's health for. Just my personal opinion.

I didnt drink it in the first trimester but the day of my 2nd I was all over that coffee! lol

You can have up to 200 mg of caffeine. Have that cup of coffee and love the hell out of it.

I can't drink coffee but I love my sweet tea and Mt Dew.

They say up to two cups a day is fine, and I'm sure one cup won't do anything. But for me personally, since this is my first pregnancy, I'm not taking any risks. I cut out coffee completely just to be safe... And I've only had decaf when I missed the taste. If you need to it wake up have some orange juice or an apple!

I tried cutting it out completely but the withdrawal was really bad.  If I was planning my pregnancy I would have started sooner but but the time I found out I had to slowly wean myself off.  I have a caffeine dependence so it's hard but I've gotten down to drinking half of a cup a day.  I still get pretty bad headaches but I have been dealing with it.  I also eat dark chocolate as dessert every so often.

My doctor said up to 220 mg caffeine per day is perfectly fine. That's about 2 regular size cups of regular coffee (I think 12 oz). Or, one grande size Starbucks espresso drink (no extra espresso). So, I enjoy my coffee still- just can't drink as much as before.

I was told that there is a limit on how much you can drink, but you can drink it if you want it. You can also get decaf if you're still worried after looking up how much you can have.

Most docs recommend staying under 150-200mg of caffeine per day, so a cup is completely fine :)
