Delayed Clamping?

Anyone heard of this? Know anything about it? Pros & cons? Just heard about it for the first time.

I will be doing delayed clamping. But I will be waiting until it stops pulsating. The baby gets more blood and stem cells this way. Cord blood banking is just still too expensive but I want to give my baby the best right off the bat. The cord usually stops pulsating after minutes. So if you have a healthy baby they can work on them and do everything they need whole baby is on your chest getting all the good stuff!

The nurse at our birthing class said its best to wait until it stops pulsing, and I read a bunch of stuff saying it can help with nuero development, gives the baby an increased level of iron, helps with lung development, all sorts of benefits. She didn't mention any downside and I haven't really read of any either.

I spoke with my doctor about delayed cord claiming and she said that for babies born before 38 weeks it is a good idea because it drastically reduces the risk of anemia. However, she said full term babies who have delayed cord clamping have 2% increase risk of jaundice. Just something to ponder.

I really don't think there are any cons. At my prenatal class, the nurse said the most benefit is waiting 30 seconds and then clamping so we will be doing that. I know some people wait until the umbilical cord stops pulsating but the nurse said it makes no difference after that 30 seconds since baby is out in the world. It improves red blood cell count and decreases the need for blood transfusions.

No cons.  The only issue is that in the event of an emergency, there may not  be time (such as if the baby had to be rescucitated).  But there's no downside I can think of.  The standard delay is fairly brief, a matter of minutes.

I have heard of it.  They leave you attached so that all the blood drains from the placenta to the baby.  I don't know too much about it but that There are some complications that's why they clamp straight away and give you the oxytocin to expel the placenta but then the benefit to the baby is great all the extra oxygen and blood etc. Do some research to find all the pros and cons.
