How does doc know baby is breech?

Question

My doctor only does one ultrasound at 19 weeks. She uses a doppler to find heartbeat at each of my appointments, but from this point forward,  how would she be able to determine if the baby is in breech position without an ultrasound.  FTM here, maybe this is a simple answer.

Midwives and doctors are trained to feel the position of a baby in utero. If they're unsure or concerned about the position (less likely the further along you are), they'll do an ultrasound.

I'm not 100% sure, but I do know my midwife can tell exactly how mine is laying. I had an appointment today and she pushed around and found where his head was pretty easily.

once the baby gets big enough, the doctor can tell just by touching to find the baby's head. 
at my 24weeks apointment my baby was too small to tell, even though the doctor tried.

The technique is called the leopold's maneuver. They put their hands on different parts of your belly to tell where the fetal parts are. Placing their hand on your pelvis and kind of rocking it back and forth can give them an indication if the head is down (you get a bobble head motion if the head is down). They can also get a hint by where th heart tones are heard. If you're 38-39 weeks and the heart beat is higher in your uterus, then the baby could be breech.
