Dealing with unwanted advances from men in a professional environment
So this past weekend I worked at our annual "Alumni Weekend" at my college. The name is pretty self-explanatory, it's when the college's alumni come to visit for the weekend, it's mostly old men who come to get drunk and visit with their old fraternity brothers. Our job is to be their tour guides and to be helpful and answer any questions they may have. We were told by our boss to be very polite, courteous, and essentially treat the alumnus as VIPs since this whole weekend is about them.
On Friday night there was a formal dinner and an alumni who was in his 60s came up to me and was being very inappropriate. It was clear he was drunk, and he was saying things to me like "your dress is so tight and I can't keep my eyes off you" (I was wearing a modest knee-length dress). I tried to laugh it off and change the conversation while still being polite, but then he proceeded to grab my hand and told me to go on "a walk" with him! I was so creeped out but we were told to always be polite and professional. I didn't know what to say except politely laugh and say no thank you and pull my hand away. Thankfully, one of the guys I was working with saw how uncomfortable I was and interrupted and told me I was needed elsewhere. I didn't want to disrespect the alumni but I wanted him to Get the F off me! How do you deal with things like this in a professional work environment?
