Do you think we have FREE WILL ?

Recently social psychology, neuroscience, and certain physicists have been coming out with data that they believe will eventually prove that we have no free will. These physicalists suggest that we have no control over our thoughts, intentions, or behaviors. They believe that everything we do is determined by a combination of our genetics, childhood experiences and other environmental/social factors, as well as our mental states (depression, hysteria, etc). What do you think? Please comment!

I think all of those things do affect thr person we become. I also think that at some point we become adults and truly understand right from wrong and good behavior from bad. Some of us might have some things crossed that prevent us from making good Decision,  but saying we have no choice over our day to day emotions and well being is bogus.

I think they are trying to justify doing what they are doing by saying we can't help ourselves because we don't have free will. With other words I think what they are saying is a load of bs

I agree 100%. We are influenced by many factors whether is genetics, environmental, learned behaviors... however we do have a choice. Even though we are influenced and the situation is given/presented to us, we still have a choice. I truly believe that even the choices we have are given to us to lead to a certain outcome. So yeah... I don't think we have free will. Great debate topic.

(Cont.) Sure, it is hard for some people to control their eating habits due to many different reasons like depression or relationship problems, but I've always seen these people as "weak-minded" and lacking self-will. So, is this a matter of an actual disorder in which the chemicals in their brain prevent them from not eating too much? And can we say that these people have less or no "self/free will"? Or just a matter of giving in to bad habits and not being able to control themselves? Or is there a difference? If there is no difference and this really is a matter of a chemical imbalance in the brain, is free will something that can be measured and compared? Surely there is an average amount of free will that the common population has, and people with more free will than others who excel in what they do and become very successful from actions that were not desirable at the time, and finally, people with severe mental disabilities who are not cognitively stable enough to control their own own actions or even bodily movements who have little to no free will. This is an interesting topic and would love to hear what you all think!

Obviously this has an affect. We make decisions based on past experiences. This is not new science. But trying to say that we cannot think freely and make our own decisions is just crazy! Free will is what kicks in when people quit bad habits, don't do things they really want to do without good reason, etc. I think it can be argued both ways, and it cannot be applied to everyone. People with psychological disorders and people who literally cannot think clearly may be lacking free will, scientifically. But I honestly feel that this argument and scientific research is just an ongoing trend of a lazier and lazier generation less capable of making decisions using free will. Recently I saw a commercial on TV for a new drug prescribed for B.E.D. disorder. BED stands for Binge Eating Disorder. I wondered at first if it was a joke because I couldn't believe what I was watching. Really?? Taking medication for not being able to stop yourself from eating!!! And the fact that the acronym for this "disorder" is BED just cracked me up.......

I do believe that those things have an affect, but I do not believe that you have no control over your thoughts or actions. I believe that a person must become aware of the conditioning they received in childhood by their parents and society, as well as their genetic make up and ancient memories that are ingrained in their DNA, etc. to understand more about themselves and their genetic blueprint and then they may become aware of their behaviors and thoughts patterns and make a choice to begin to change them.

how can you say that it's God's plan and there is no free will? if you said that. you obviously don't go to church and have never studied the bible..... because you think God looks at one person and says "my plan for you is Hell." no.... he gives us free will and we make bad choices that send us to hell.
