I've done/do both. 
Don't be the type of parent to tell your kid "you can talk to me about anything and trust me" and then not follow through. My mom said that sort of thing but when she found out I was suicidal she went on and on about how selfish I am, how I'm ruining our lives, why do I have "to treat her like that", etc. 
Oh, and when she found out I cut, she hit me. On my cuts.

So yeah, don't do that, parents.

My friend use to self harm when she was In school. She was so unhappy with living at home with her real dad. He made her do everything and she had a really hard relationship with him. I think the person in question needs help asap because it effect them later on in life. They usually have really low selfastem. There is a lot of help out there so look into it. I hope that helped a Lil bit.

Hardest thing I've watched my daughter go through! I felt helpless even though I was her loudest voice! I cried myself to sleep every night praying, wishing & begging to let me take her place and her pain! Knowing that this was unfortunately something that she would and is overcoming herself with me ready to catch her if she needs me to! I wouldn't wish this on anyone!

I am the child that has self harmed and i kind of attempted suicide i nearly OD on pills idk if it counts or not. Please get your child help they need it. Lock up the knives and pills and help them in every way please
