16 year old and 25 year old?

Would y'all say it's okay for a 16/almost 17 yr old and a 25 yr old to be FRIENDS? Not romantically or sexually or anything like that. Just buds. Entirely platonic. Like, we just play chess and talk about spirituality 80% of the time. 
My family is just wary because my mom met my dad when she was around my age, and he was about 30. They got involved and made bad choices, aka ME, and he ditched. So they're convinced that I'm going to make the same decisions as her...

My sister is 14 and the thought of her hanging out with someone that old scares me. What would they possibly have in common? And why does someone that old need a teenage friend? I'm only 20 and I don't have friends that young. It just seems suspicious I guess? Like they need friends their own age, not children.

I met my husband when I was 16 almost 17 and he was 26. We have been together for 9 years. We got a 4 year old girl. And a boy on the way. I think it can be totally fine. I would be careful of course. 16 almost 17 isn't a child. 18 you are considered an adult so magically in a year you'll be smarter and know more. Naw. Just don't be stupid about things if it turns into anything romantic.

My new neighbor has teenage daughters heavy into their emo/scene/goth life and she's volunteered me to keep an eye in their direction when the hours are in between her coming from work and them coming home from school & all that. I guess technically it's hanging out? But in my mind it's more of me  supervising. If they were to ask if we were friends I wouldn't say no cause it may sound mean, but we're not friends. We talk about similar stuff & what hair color might come next and how they can't wait to be "my age" (😩😖) with tattoos and still doing my own "goth" looks-- but there's a connection missing that I would make with someone in their 20s. Cause as much as I can remember & relate to their life, I no longer relate, currently. I am an adult, they are not. The point is: I have zero nefarious intentions. There is a power imbalance of influence here & this is where the bad people in the world take advantage. Your spiritual talks could open up your emotional side, and you get attached, and he traps you in a web. Your mom/family have experienced the bad and they just want the best for you and your future. I can't tell you if this guy is a good guy or an evil one, but I can tell you that this is why they are weary of him hanging out with you. He is an adult and needs adult friends. And this is not an insult at your maturity or anything. It's all directed and questioned at him. They don't trust him.
