I just got my period

So I'm 13 and for the first time I got my period yesterday. I have had discharge for about 2-3years and went to my docter and she told me it was a sign menstruation. My discharge had been changing texture so I was planning on going to the docter but of course a couple days later at a family reunion I get my period! I've been wearing tampons because my flow is pretty heavy for the first time getting it. I kind of hate wearing them only because of taking them out but I'm getting used to it. Might go swimming today....what works best for that?
