Gofundme?

I know we are supposed to be charitable, but can someone explain to me why people ask for money when someone dies nowadays? Are the funds for funeral costs?? If so, what the heck were people doing before gofundme was founded? Were bodies just thrown somewhere in the street or....??? I'm not trying to be insensitive but I'm really curious. Btw funerals have always been expensive. This is nothing new. My question is what were they doing before gofundme? Do people not plan for death or what??

The singer that was shot the other night, her manager, put up a GoFundMe within 24 hours of her death and people were reeling.... saying how insurance would pay for the funeral expenses.
I think GoFundMe should be used for funerals and medical treatments when people cannot afford it.
Some are tacky, for breast surgery and honeymoons.

The costs that go towards funerals are so the families do not have to finance and pay interest on burying their son/daughter/mother/husband etc. To bury a body and have proper services will run you about 10k. Many people go into even more debt because they take out a loan or put it on a credit card.

The other money goes to the family. People arent working when their family member dies, especially if it was the breadwinner of the family.

Money also goes to medical bills. Not everyone has top notch insurance.

Honestly you sound either very young or just super ignorant. Think before you post.

Yes, funerals are insanely expensive! Whether you choose cremation or burial, they both cost thousands of dollars. And even if the family can pay for it, there's still other bills to be taken care of. Or maybe it just lightens the load a little bit. Or maybe it's just a tangible way to show the family that you care. It's not necessarily about the dollars. Before Gofundme, people would often take up collections physically. Online just makes it easier.

Plan for death? Most deaths are random, how can you plans for a random event??? Would you not want help with funeral cost for one of your loved ones if the unthinkable were to happen and you didn't have the funds to cover the expenses???

Funerals are expensive, you have to pay a lot of people. I always found it uncomfortable for people to donate to a funeral but they do it to help give w great celebration of life to that person. When things happen suddenly not everyone is ready to bury someone. Especially when it's someone who was young and their life was taken suddenly without any sort of warning. Families have to pay for the casket, burial fees, the funeral home, they might need to buy a suit/dress, pay for the family car, and the headstone. So the costs add up.

It can be for anything and yes funerals. A friend of mine used one for her baby who passed away. It's for family and friends HELP  out cover costs. Doesn't mean they can't afford it themselves...

I am in Ireland. If a family is left unable to pay the community usually organises a fundraising night. People from the community get a night out and funds are raised to help the family.

I think GoFundMe is actually great for helping those who need assistance in paying for funerals. The whole "what did they do before GoFundMe" is irrelevant...my dad died and we didn't receive a GoFundMe benefit and we made it work. With or without a benefit, most people are generous to others when a loved one dies. 
I think it's amazing that these people are being gifted the money. A time of grieving should be for just that...grieving. To not have to worry about when you need to go back to work or how you're going to pay your mortgage is a blessing. 
They aren't going out and buying porches and feraris. They are grieving without the daily stresses of life.

GoFundme can help with things that extend beyond just funeral costs---it can cover leftover medical bills, helping the family with cost of living after death, ect. Say for instance someone who is the family's main or sole breadwinner dies. That family's expenses will obviously not go away once that person dies so funds from a GoFundme can help offset some of those costs while the family adjusts and finds new ways to care for the family.

People collecting money in this way also isn't anything new and charity drives for individual families have always been a thing. In the past it was just more community-based and done through schools, churches, workplaces, neighborhoods, or other social groups. The only difference is that it has now moved online, which is great because now you can reach more people.
