Nausea Medication

Angela
My doctor had originally prescribed me Diclegis for my severe morning sickness, I had been taking samples of it that she had given me during our initial appointment. But when I went to fill the rx my insurance wouldn't cover it without a prior approval first. So instead of my Dr sending an approval they just wrote an rx for a different medicine which was covered, Ondansetron (generic for Zofran). I've only taken them a few times, once every 2-3 days. But I've been reading many articles about how there are possible birth defects from taking this drug early in the first trimester, and I'm currently only 8w1d. The fact that Diclegis is approved by the FDA for pregnancy where as the Zofran is not makes me very nervous. I know zofran has been prescribed for morning sickness for many years but there isn't enough evidence to neither prove or disprove birth defects. Anyone else taking this medicine have any opinions on it? Am I being super paranoid for no reason?

My doctor refuses to prescribe Zofran. He said it's not safe. I didn't have insurance and paid $60 for 10 pills of Diclegis. Let me tell you, miracle pills! They are half vitamins like B12 which make them a lot safer. I have had such bad morning sickness I've lost 15 pounds! Taking Diclegis I am able to keep down food and actually eat and leave the house! I now have insurance so I'm fine. But go to the official Diclegis website, they have a discount form you can give your doctor if you do or don't have insurance. You'll be so thankful you did!!

With my son I tried Zofran and Reglan.  At the time there wasn't really much being said about Zofran being linked to issues but I found the Reglan worked better for me and was much cheaper.  My doc said it was not as common for Reglan to work better than Zofran but it does for some people and I believe it is (currently) believed to be safer.  Maybe ask your doc their opinion on it?  For what it's worth my little guy came out fine regardless of the medications and the fact I barely ate anything the whole nine months!

Ask if they have a coupon. I have one that makes it $40 without prior authorization. Unfortunately it didn't touch my nausea and never got the script filled. I'm on a generic phenegren now.  Super tired but not running to the toilet all day long. Good trade off for me. Good luck!

I think I'm gonna stop taking it and try to find some more natural remedies. I know that being sick and dehydrated is worse than taking medicine but I don't know if I want to risk it:/
