Yes or no to bumpers?

Question

I want a baby bumper but I've heard conflicting things about them. I like that the baby can't hit their head on the crib but at the same time, I've read reports about them suffocating the baby. Thoughts???

Safety experts recommend not having anything in your crib except a fitted sheet to reduce the risk of SIDS while baby is 1 year or less

I used when my kids were nonmobile but removed if I felt I need a better eye on them or if the we're getting big to close. Only you can make that decision

I honestly don't get it. Bumpers have been around for a long time. All 3 of my children are alive and healthy. I'm using the bumper for my new little one as well. It's a huge crib and baby is small, plus baby will be swaddled (correctly).

I havnt heard much of babies hitting their heads hard enough to cause damage but I have head of limbs getting stuck between bars and suffocating so the easy fix is mesh breathable bumpers.

Remember ladies, SIDS and suffocation are 2 different things.  SIDS baby passes away with an unknown cause.  Suffocating is just that.  Bumpers don't cause SIDS.

We used bumpers and plan to with this one as well. We removed them when she got bigger and was able to roll around. Honestly, if you plan on using a bassinet which I do recommend, by the time the baby is bigger it's kinda pointless.

I used a bumper with both boys.  The mesh bumpers are no help.  My kids moved all over the crib - they actually enjoyed sleeping against the bumper (when they were old enough to move around).  Never had a problem. Never worried about it. I was more concerned with not having a bumper in the crib.

This is a direct quote from the recommendations by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Anecdotal reports from moms that "they used bumpers with all their kids and they were fine" is well and good, but does NOT reflect the significant amount of research and data that has gone into this issue. If you want to follow the most up to date recommendations, then do not use bumpers!!
