FTM : how many size newborn diapers to buy?

Question

I would like to begin buying diapers as that seems to be my husbands biggest worry. But how many size newborns to buy? Also, do mothers usual get them at their showers or not so often?

A lot of people skip newborn size and go straight to size 1, thats actually usually what they give you at the hospital size one goes from 8-14 lbs newborn is less than 10lbs. Many people have babies who are born too big for newborn diapers... But if you have smaller babies you could probably use size one for about a month and newborns usually  soil 10 diapers a day X 30 days = 300 diapers. I think two big boxes would be plenty... If I remember correctly that's a bit more than 120 diapers in a box.

I like the newborn ones until the umbilical stump falls off. They have a little notch for it. As far as stocking up I'd get 1 and 2. They will literally be in newborn for a month or so maybe 2 but my son moved to 1 pretty quick.  Though he's been in 3 since he was about 9 months( now 16 months). So I'd would say stock up on bigger sizes for sure.

For the sake of stocking up, I would say buy two boxes. If the second box goes unopened (or if you only need a few more after using up box 1), you can always bring the box back to the store and exchange it for a larger size. Usually you don't even need a receipt.

I say get one box of the newborn size. The babies grow so fast and plus I like to use the newborn size at least Until the umbilical cord falls off..

With both my other babies I bought 1 box incase they were small.... they were 6lbs 13oz and 6lbs and 14oz. So I used them for a couple weeks. I will be buying a box again in case it decades to come out small like the last 2. 
Fingers crossed it does. It's measuring a week bigger in hight and 2 weeks in weight 😨

I don't stock up on diapers. I buy from Amazon Mom subscribe and save. Delivery 1 time a month.  Wipes too! Best prices. Better than Costco.

This is my second baby and I only plan on getting 1 box of newborn. You may get a lot of newborn diapers from the hospital. I would focus on buying more diapers in size 1 and 2 because baby may be in those sizes a lot longer. Good luck mama!

I have about 300 newborn diapers and 200 size 1 so far. I'm just now 20 weeks. Most of mine I got with coupons it was hard not to pass up.

I usually don't get too many boxes of newborn size. I only have 2. After the first couple weeks,size 1 fits better. Its crazy how quick they grow the first month.

Yes I think you may receive some as a shower gift. Especially if you put it on the registry. If you are purchasing yourself,  do not open the package/box.  Check the store policy to see if you'll be able to exchange for different sizes in 6-8 months.

Like others said,  there really is no way of knowing how many of each size your baby will use.   Newborn diapers have a different cut on the front for the umbilical cord.  You can fold over the front of a size 1 to get the same effect.
