Massage?

Hi everyone!  Im in week 10 of my pregnancy and have a massage scheduled for Thursday....I was thinking of just having her work on my neck and shoulders. Thoughts?

Massages are not good during the first trimester.  I had to move my own appointment because they won't work on women in the first trimester.  Most places won't.

I go to massage envy and get the prenatal massages. I'm not even 10 weeks and have been in twice with no issues from them. Plus it's a whole body massage with pillows and all that awesome jazz. Totally worth it!

Thank you all SO much for sharing your thoughs.  I decided to forego the massage until the second trimester. I am an athlete, so she has been my my massage therapist for a couple of years and knows my body--so thats a plus. Thank you all again!

Massages are totally safe and encouraged during pregnancy! There is nothing you can do to either cause or stop a miscarriage. In fact, a relaxing massage could go a long ways to helping you relax and destress! I asked my midwife when I needed to switch to a prenatal specific massage, and she said when it's no longer comfortable to lay on your tummy. You can always tell the massage therapist that you're pregnant and they may choose to avoid certain areas. My massage therapist won't do belly or midline-foot pressure, but I know others that will. In short, massages are 100% safe! Enjoy!

They need training to work on pregnant women as,your bones and stuff are softer.  I would phone before hand in case they dnt have someone at hand and u might have to reschedule.

A lot of massage places say no ladies in first trimester because miscarriage is so common... Not from massage, just in general. Like others noted, if can trigger more guilt and regret if, God forbid, a miscarriage happened in the days/weeks/months after a massage. I know I looked for reasons why after my two miscarriages. Desperate for a reason, and eager to blame myself for what I must have done wrong. When in reality, it was just a "bad download."

If your place allows it, and you feel comfortable, ask for someone with some prenatal massage experience. There are a few pressure points in the ankles, apparently, that can trigger labor, which is one reasons "they" may recommend avoiding massages early.

Just let them know how far along you are and they'll do the safe thing—whether it's reschedule or do a different type of massage. A massage can't cause a miscarriage. I'm sure they just don't want to be blamed for it if it happens.

I would reschedule. I had a massage in January about 2 days before I found out I was pregnant. I knew they were not good during the first trimester so I was very hard on myself after we found out, and miscarried a couple days later. Now, idk if the massage was the cause of it, but I will always wonder if that choice I made lead to that outcome. I'm now 9w4d with our rainbow and won't chance it!
