Who believes in whipping "spanking" ?

I know when I was young that's how I was taught a lesson. No I was not "beat" or abused.  And I believe it is a good way to teach.

My kids ran from me in the store one time. Opposite directions. I nabbed one real quick, had to chase the other while carrying the other child. No one was trying to help me grab the little she devil so i took my flip flop off, threw it at her, she stopped, i caught up, and whacked em both with my flip flop. So now, people give me weird looks, laugh, or their jaws drop in shock when i say 'dont make me take off my shoe' and they immediately straighten up. They were just toddlers at the time(now fixing to start school) and it was those real cheap $2 flip flops but it scared em. Obviously left an impression since it still works 3yrs down the road.

I work in the mental health field. A recent study was done showing that spanking is harmful to kids' long-term mental health outcomes. Here's a quote from that article and link to it:

"We found that spanking was associated with unintended detrimental outcomes and was not associated with more immediate or long-term compliance, which are parents' intended outcomes when they discipline their children," Gershoff said.
On top of this, the traditional line that “it never did me any harm” doesn't stand up very well. Adults who were spanked as a child were more likely to suffer mental health problems and to behave in anti-social ways.

I'm mixed on it. I was spanked maybe 3 total times as a child, and it I don't feel repressed or emotionally unstable because of it. It was just a quick little bop on the butt, lol. However, I have seen some parents smack the absolute bejesus out of their child's hineys, and to that I have to say no. There's a very fine line, in my opinion.

Depends on the child and situation. Most children can be disciplined without laying a hand on them. I will love if I never have to spank my kids. Some though need spanked in certain situations. My child talking back, no I wouldn't spank. My child running into the street or reaching into the fire after I tell them no, then yes spanking.  I was spanked a few times with a wooden spoon, and I needed it and learned my lesson. I don't have mental health or social issues, while I'm sure it can contribute, in my opinion there are other factors involved then solely spanking with those studies.

I got a couple of ass pats as a kid. Now I don't suffer from "affluenza". 
You know why majority of 18,17,16,15 and under need a safe place because someone corrected them from being a brat, spoiled or thinks they're entitled? Its because parents don't correct bad behavior when they're little. 
You don't need to spank your kid to punish but sometimes its necessary. The generation we have now is the one who raised it! Remember that! Its not the current generation fault that the one before it decided not to correct bad behavior.

I was never spanked as a child because my mum was physically punished a lot as a child and she didn't want us to have the same issues she had with her father. So my siblings and I were never punished that way instead my parents found other ways to discipline us. There methods were effective. Out of four kids two of us are responsible adults that are succeeding in university and will (hopefully) have lots of opportunities after school. And my younger brothers that are still living at home are great kids. Very responsible and not too naughty for teenaged boys. So I'll probably follow my parents example and stay away from physical punishment when I have my own kids.

I don't think there is ever a need to lay your hands on anyone, especially a child. There's other ways that I believe are more effective for disciplining .

I believe in it but I also know whippings don't work for every child.

I got two maybe three whippings in my life. Didn't bother me that much. But take away my books, TV, dessert, or phone. That hurt.
