Should respect be earned or entitled?

Should respect be earned or entitled? 
And in the situation I would like to apply this to: if a parent expects good behaviour from their child, should the parent be expected to set a good example? Or is that parent entitled to obedience from their child because of their position as an elder - regardless of their behaviour?

Can it be both? I think the child should always respect their parents no matter what but that doesn't mean the parents can act as disrespectful as they want. I do agree that parents should lead by example and have just as good behavior as their children. The child should always respect them as well.

Both. There is the baseline respect for someone as a human being. Everything else from that point on is earned or lost.

I respect everyone, until you give me a reason not to. You aren't just entitled to unconditional respect from me based on age, or position, etc.

A little confusing with just a yes or no vote, but I think respect is earned.  I always say "repect given is respect received"   Meaning, respect is mutual, it's isn't something that is entitled automatically just because they are your parents

I think it works kinda like my old job paid. I think there's like a base level of respect plus bonus respect earned for being extraordinarily awesome.

You get basic respect, to have alot of respect from me, that happens and is "earned" over time and can easily be taken away of you step out of line.

At first entitled. You should always respect someone unless they don't deserve it. I've always said and heard 'I'll respect you if you respect me' but if you don't respect them why would they respect you?

This is a great question. 
I think a parent should earn respect from their child by being consistent with their intentions to always put the child first. 
When a parent shows a child, "no really, you are my priority and I will ALWAYS do what I think is best for you." The child WILLINGLY respects the parent, instead of being forced to.
Isn't it always better to willingly give respect than be forced into it? I don't think it's fair for a parent to demand respect when they don't have their child's best interest in mind.

I show respect no matter what until someone disrespects me then it just turns to kindness and i kill em with it 😘
