is 5 years too long?

my SO and I have been together for 5 years, we have a house together & a dog. we talk about marriage often, also talk about when we want to start trying for a baby. but it doesn't seem like he's moving quickly to propose. I feel like by 5 years he should know he wants to marry me. how long is too long to wait?

Maybe you should take the plunge and propose to him! No shame in that. I proposed to my boyfriend, I bought a ring and took him to dinner, the whole shibang. I pulled out the ring and pushed the box towards him. "What is this?" And he opened it. Then I asked him to marry me, the big dope started to cry. Don't be afraid to be the one to ask.

My cousin and her now husband were dating for TEN years. And some couples are engaged longer! There is never a right amount of time. This is REALLY a conversation that you need to have with him. Proposals (although movies show it this way) shouldn't be a complete surprise and you two need to be on the same page. He deserves to know how you feel

I don't know how much my comment will help, but my ex and I were together 4 years. He was scared of marriage, atleast that's what he told me. He promised that he would propose to me by our thirties, so I waited patiently, secretly planning our "wedding". The day that he ended things with me, he told me that he never saw me at the end of the aisle. I'm not saying leave him, I've known people who were together a long time before they got married, and they were happy long after, but you have to wonder.

Don't push it. It'll happen when it's supposed to happen. You want to want him to propose to you, you don't have to push him into doing it. So what if you have a house and a dog and you're not married? And who cares if you want to have a baby and wouldn't be married? You love him and your life together and that's all that should matter :) let it happen when it's supposed to!

In all honesty why would he marry you? He has all the perks already. My BF and I met 22 years ago. I was 14 and he was 16. We were young and we're constantly on again off again. Now he says he is grown up and a man and regrets all of that. He says he wants to marry me but I know it will never happen. I honestly can't see him buying me a ring and going through with the whole marriage thing. If your boyfriend wanted to marry you he would have by now. People usually put it off until they are faced with an ultimatum and then they chose. It's tough.

I don't think it is. I've known couples who waited three/four years and married and happy but then divorced after six years. But couples who waited ten years to get to know each other and commit and then get married who are unbelievably happy and married for 15 years or so i think and I've never seen anyone more meant to be and happy. 
To be honest it's up to you. If you feel like you know the in's and out's of your partner and appreciate and handle the good and bad times and you feel like you're ready then that's great! But you have to acknowledge that your partner needs to feel ready too. Talk about it and if he's not ready then it's okay to wait for him but not too long if you think he'll never commit on that level.
