Godparents?

Is this still a thing people do and what's really the point of it?  I don't really have any close friends so I'm not sure.

Godparents are a Christian tradition and are chosen to stand with the family during the infant's baptism and are to take on the role of looking after the child's religious path (to support their godchild to live a Christian life in fellowship with the church.) They are not chosen as those that will take care of the child should something happen to the parents. It's a religious tradition and since my husband and I are not religious we will not be having godparents for our child.

I mean it's not really a thing I think it's more of a tradition if you were brought up with god parents and still have them and that's a tradition you want to carry with your child it's not meant to be a trend or a thing not something you have to do

If you are religious a godparent is chosen and named during christening

You can chose them even if youre not religious

They are the person or people your child will go to in the event of your passing or your so/their parents passing either way religious or not godparents do stand in court as long as its stated in a will or last rights

My bff calls herself my kids' godmother, but neither was christened and if we die, my parents get all 3. For some it's just a status thing.

I'm having a christening for my daughter when she's sbout 8 months and that's why she has god parents.

Yes! It's a special honor in the Catholic faith and the christening is a special sacrament.

My daughters have godparents that are in my family and are baptized, this baby will be too. Depends on where you stand. I'm Catholic so it's our tradition.

Godparents are supposed to be the people you choose to have your child If you both passed away or were unable to look after your child. It is no longer only a religious thing.
