Middle name. Is it really necessary to have it?

We have a long last name with my husband (he is Ukranian). We live in Cali and going to stay here for all our life. And we decided to give our future kids short names, like 1-2 letter names. For ex. Our baby girl, I'm carrying now, will be Mo. 
But do we really have to chose a middle name? What is it for besides traditions? As I see most people even don't use it anywhere.
Can we leave it blank?

It's your baby so you can do whatever you want. Since you are naming a daughter "Mo" I wouldn't worry too much about tradition. Do what your heart desires but keep in mind your child has to live with the name forever...well at least until they are 18.

My first two brothers do not have middle names but their first names are rare (evzen&harlan) but me and my younger siblings do and I know my brothers are a lil jealous about it my middle name actually sounds like a last name but it is unique (Aldercy)

I didn't have a middle name. I took my maiden name as my middle name when I got married. When we had our son, I wanted to skip the middle name for him too since I don't like too many boy names. My husband was definitely against it so he has a middle name. Legally speaking, no you don't have to have a middle name, so go for it!

My brother, sister and I as well as my children all have middle names but my little brothers (from my dad's second marriage) only have middle initials. With that said neither of my parents have middle names I think it's all up to you and if you want to or not.

I don't have a middle name. My parents don't believe in giving girls middle name, since they can use their maiden name as a middle name when they get married (I feel the same). So I say there's no need if you don't want to give them one.

A friend of mine doesn't have a middle name and I remember growing up with her she was sad she didn't have one as a kid. She used to pretend to have one, or she would talk about giving herself one when she got older. I think since most people have a middle name, you might want to consider how that could make your child feel in the future. I know it made my friend feel left out. Food for thought!
