Crazy toddler

My 2 year old is out of control. This is my first kid ever and he is just a handful now..I swear there hasn't been a night where he hasn't needed a time out. I love my little man more than anything but can someone help me cope with this toddler attitude?! His dad is against spanking cus he was abused as a kid but sometimes he just needs it and I'll do if needed but that doesn't even help.
