Community Groups and Race

Glow

We've recently had a number of posts about the existence of a couple of groups for black members of our Community.

Here's Glow's position: The Glow Community is meant to be an inclusive, safe, supportive place. We support the African American and Black Moms groups, and will continue to do so. There are issues that affect black women and black families more than they do the general population, and we want our black community members to be able to connect with others who have had the same experiences or who can share relevant advice.

Michelle, a member of our Community, and someone who is affected by these groups, explained why they are so important by saying:"As an AA, there are some issues that we face like sickle cell anemia, our hair care during pregnancy, and other predisposed diseases that the general board would not be able to help with."

We have a lot of very specific groups here in the Glow Community: TTC groups for women with PCOS, TTC groups for women of within certain ages, TTC for Christians, and many others. That's fine. And, more importantly, it does not hurt anyone that these specific groups exist. Frequently, the question of why white groups are not allowed comes up. We do not allow these groups because we will not give cover, even unintentionally, to white supremacists. We can not ignore history. "Whites only" is something that happened within living memory. And whether or not a "white group" it is intended to support white supremacy, it automatically does, because that is how it will be understood.

The Glow Community exists to let women support women. Even if you do not agree with the existence of groups aimed at minorities, remember that there are flesh-and-blood women on the other side of the screen, and leave them in peace.
