Does anyone know?

This is my second baby. He is 17 days old. I think.I've finally gotten over the whole breaking in the nipples soreness chaffing and all that but now it still hurts like &!+=$@! Everytime he first starts sucking but it feels alright after about 20 seconds or so. Does anyone know why it hurts so freaking bad when he first starts.

If you're feeling a pulling sensation pain when he starts, that's the "let down". Buy a warm compress (I have a rice pack) and eat for 30 seconds. Place it around you breast for a few minutes before you start nursing. I've found that it allows everything to flow easier. My baby seems to be more content when I do this before as well.

I hired a lactation specialist to come to my house per the pediatrician's recommendation - I needed help with latching in my setting...where I feed my son. Money well spent. I learned that a proper latch does not hurt...who knew?!

Perhaps it's the actual way your baby is latching? Is he or she getting the right amount of fleshy boob in the mouth, versus just grabbing the nipple?

My Abigail is a bit of a nipple chomper (born 30 June) and it takes us a few goes usually to get the latch correct (and can't always do it anyway).

Maybe someone has a link to a YouTube video or a website with some images /video of latching techniques! I could definitely use something as I get it right sometimes, and other days I just can't no matter how hard I try. I've had a look on YouTube, but couldn't actually find a good video about it, many of them were more about holding the baby or just not really useful.
